Wickapecko Park
The Deal Lake Watershed Alliance (DLWA) has been working on improving a lakeside park area on Wickapecko Drive in order to better serve both Ocean Township and Asbury Park for recreational use. This park is ideally suited for connecting surrounding communities to their key natural asset – Deal Lake. The park has been neglected for far too long and this project will improve public access for fishing, kayaking/canoeing, as well as lake viewing at this excellent location. Currently, the pathways to the water’s edge are unsafe and not suitable for easy lake access. This park is listed on the NJDEP Recreation and Open Space Inventory ROSI and therefore qualifies for Green Acres Grant funding. We are in the process of applying for a grant to improve this park so that it is more accessible for all to enjoy.
The rendering below was prepared for the DLWA by our water resources team at Rutgers University. Our goal is to add handicap accessible pathways, a dock with a kayak/canoe launch, bike racks, a fishing line recycling bin, pollinator and rain gardens to improve the lake’s water quality and an observation platform with benches for all to enjoy the view of Deal Lake. This space can serve as an educational resource as well, as there will be signs identifying wildlife native to this area as well as the plants in the gardens and their role as “green infrastructure” for our lake.
We welcome input from the community regarding additional ideas and suggestions for the park. Contact info.dlwanj@gmail.com.
